Maternity care

Maternity care!

Kraamzorg Het Zonnetje believes it’a important that the maternity nurse supports you and your family with high-quality care in a personal and professional manner. We want this time a rock in the surf for your entire family.

We strive to use one maternity nurse for the entire care. So you do not get a different maternity nurse every time.

Activities?

What do our maternity nurses do for you and your family?

  1. The maternity nurse assists the midwife in a home birth (partus assistance).
  2. The maternity nurse provides “mother and child care” (checks / care of the maternity nurse and baby).
    • Examples of maternity checks include: “pulse”, “temperature” and “flow”.
    • Examples of baby checks are “skin color”, “temperature”, “weight”, “navel”, “reflexes”, “crying behavior” and “stool”.
  3. The maternity nurse helps and supports the maternity nurse in breastfeeding and / or bottle feeding.
  4. The maternity nurse observes and reports to the obstetrician and / or treating physician and completes the care file on a daily basis.
  5. The maternity nurse provides information to mom and dad, advice and tips about taking care of your child.
  6. The maternity nurse does a number of important household tasks (hygiene for you and your baby).
  7. Depending on the number of available hours, the maternity nurse can also perform other (domestic) tasks (such as shopping, children to and from school, preparing meals).
  8. The maternity nurse receives the visit. The maternity nurse always assumes the wishes of the family and respects their faith and habits. This way you and your family can look back on a fantastic maternity period with a warm feeling.

Maternity care quality

Optimum quality is our goal. Our maternity nurses are all certified and also regularly follow courses and training courses. We are constantly working on improving care, ongoing processes as well as protocols.

We also ask our customers how they find the care (interim and / or afterwards).

Moreover, our practical trainer will conduct quality visits several times a year. This happens unexpectedly to the maternity nurse, but we will announce this visit by telephone beforehand.

Intake

Around the 7th month an intake interview will take place with one of one employees (usually at your home, but sometimes by telephone).

The intake interview is intended to explain our care (and working hours), but also to discuss your habits, wishes and (medical) backgrounds regarding your pregnancy and / or previous childbirth. During a home visit our staff member can assess the circumstances in your home and advise you how you can improve safety for you, your child and the maternity nurse.

Maternity care hours (LIP)

Maternity care hours are tailored to the care needs of you and your baby. The right to maternity care hours is determined by the rules in the National Indication Protocol (= L.I.P.). This protocol was introduced at the initiative of the health insurers. We do this reconciliation at three moments:

  1. During the intake interview with us.
  2. Shortly after delivery by the midwife.
  3. During the maternity period by the midwife.

As a basis, everyone is entitled to 49 hours of maternity care spread over 8 days. There are several reasons to provide more hours of care (eg “imminent infection”), but also your right to less maternity care (example “day stay in hospital and / or birth hotel”) You can also be entitled to a 9th and / or 10th day If the maternity assistant assists with the delivery (partus assistance) then these hours do not count as maternity care hours, unless the maximum number of hours (80 hours) has been granted.

Breastfeeding

The best food for your baby is breast milk. It protects your baby against viruses and bacteria by the antibodies that are in it. The composition of the breastfeeding adapts to the age of your child. Breastfeeding is the most practical and natural food for a baby. In the beginning, breastfeeding is often uncomfortable and takes a few days before you and your child are used to it. A lactation consultant specializes in breastfeeding. During the maternity period, the maternity nurse of Het Zonnetje can request help from the lactation consultant if problems arise when breastfeeding. You can also, without referral, seek the help of a lactation consultant (check your health insurance policy for reimbursement of lactation care).

Ten rules of thumb for the success of breastfeeding

UNICEF and WHO (World Health Organization) are convinced that health care, and in particular pre- and postnatal care, have a major influence on the success of breastfeeding. As a follow-up to the code of conduct in 1981, ten basic principles were formulated in 1990 for an effective breastfeeding policy. Below we have listed the 10 rules of thumb:

  1. We have a breastfeeding policy and ensure that the employees involved know this policy.
  2. We teach the employees involved the skills needed to implement the policy.
  3. We educate pregnant women about the benefits and practice of breastfeeding.
  4. We ensure that mothers receive their baby with skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth, for at least an hour. We encourage mothers to use the signals that the baby is ready to breastfeed and offer help if necessary.
  5. We explain to the mothers how to build their baby and how they can maintain milk production, even if the baby has to be separated from the mother.
  6. We ensure that the newborn receives no food other than breastfeeding, and no extra fluid, unless on medical grounds.
  7. We ensure that mother and child can stay together in one room day and night.
  8. We support that breastfeeding is sought on request.
  9. Newborns who are breastfed do not receive a teat or pacifier.
  10. We maintain contacts with other organizations and disciplines about the guidance of breastfeeding and refer parents to breastfeeding organizations.

More information about breastfeeding (breast milk) can be found on the website of the nutrician centre.

Employees must be able to work safely and healthily until they reach pensionable age. These rules also apply to maternity nurses and Kraamzorg Het Zonnetje. They are strict rules that we must respect. A maternity nurse has the right to refuse activities if the occupational health and safety rules are not complied with. It is therefore important that the maternity family meets all the requirements. The rules that we are legally bound to.

Maternity care quality

Optimum quality is our goal. Our maternity nurses are all certified and also regularly follow courses and training courses. We are constantly working on improving care, ongoing processes as well as protocols.

Maternity visit

Enjoying the beautiful moments is central. Some tips that we can do for the maternity visit:

  • On the birth announcement card you can specify rest times and when making an appointment you agree on how long the visit stays.
  • Ask the visit to wash hands if they want to hold your child.
  • If the maternity visit is cold and / or ill, then you would like to make a new appointment.
  • Are you too tired just before an appointment, do not hesitate and call the appointment.
  • Plan the visit the first week if the maternity nurse is there.
  • Do not plan full day with maternity visit, but keep at least 1 part of the day for yourself and your family.
  • Sometimes it is better to plan two appointments at the same time than two appointments spread out over the day.
  • If you find it difficult to send the visit away, ask our maternity nurse.

Different cultures

Our maternity nurses come to families with different cultural backgrounds. We have the policy to provide all our clients with optimal maternity care that is tailored to their wishes and habits. For families with a different cultural background, this means, for example, that we solve a possible communication problem creatively. Risk factors such as growth retardation, preterm birth and too low a weight are more common among babies with a different culture background. Our maternity nurse is also trained in this to stay informed.

Youth Health Care (JGZ)

After the birth of your child, you can go to youth health care (hereinafter referred to as JGZ) with all your questions about the health, upbringing and growing up of your child (up to 23 years). The basic vaccinations of the national vaccination program will get your child from the JGZ staff. On the last maternity care day our maternity nurse completes the “transfer JGZ” form for the youth nurse.

Heal prick:

Within 5 days after birth, every baby in the Netherlands receives a heel prick (free and voluntary). The blood obtained is examined for a number of diseases. If you have not received a message within four weeks of the heel prick, the result is good. To make the puncture easier, you can heat your baby’s feet fifteen minutes before the jab. Usually this is done by the midwife (depending on the municipality in which you live).

Hearing screening:

You receive a call from the JGZ for a hearing test. The hearing of your baby is tested during neonatal hearing screening. This happens in the first weeks after your child is born and it is measured whether your child is hearing enough. Good hearing is important for language development and good learning to talk and therefore also for the development of your child. The sooner a bad hearing is discovered, the sooner your baby can be treated so that the consequences remain as limited as possible.
